Redondo Beach is the largest of the three South Bay beach cities, and in the opinion of several locals, it features the most dramatic stretch of oceanfront beauty. Redondo Beach is 6.3 square miles, has a population of 64,000, is the oldest of the beach cities (incorporated 1892), and the only one with a harbor and marina facilities (over 1400 boat slips). Redondo is both a residential community and a resort city with over 1,000 hotel rooms.

Located about 7 miles south of Los Angeles International Airport, the city is divided into two main areas, South Redondo and North Redondo. South Redondo is located on Santa Monica Bay, and North Redondo is located inland east of Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach.

Redondo was a major lumber shipping port in the late 1880's to the early 1900's. It was also an early beach resort, home to the elegant Hotel Redondo (sister resort to San Diego's Hotel Del Coronado). It was here that George Freeth, Redondo's first professional lifeguard, brought the sport of surfing from Hawaii to the mainland for the first time with daily longboard demonstrations. Many older buildings remain in Redondo including many craftsman-style beach bungalows. One of Redondo's oldest attractions-the Horseshoe Pier--just underwent a multi-million dollar expansion and renovation and is home to many excellent restaurants. Redondo Beach also has a beautiful new public library and a performing arts center that hosts the city's delightful Civic Light Opera.

Located about 7 miles south of Los Angeles International Airport, the city is divided into two main areas, South Redondo and North Redondo. South Redondo is located on Santa Monica Bay, and North Redondo is located inland east of Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach. Real estate is generally more affordable in North Redondo.
